Report:

Day 1 opened with a short 5 mile ride from our hostel to Land's End for the obligatory photo at 9:30am.

The weather was blustery and wet, but that didnt deter a few friends and family to make it down to see us off...Jo and Matt's mum Briony, Jo's godmother Penny and Uncle & Auntie John and Danuta. On the friends front, a big shout out to Mark, John & Emily too, who managed an early start after a wedding the night before!!

Riding in Cornwall is hard work, and from the off it was up, down, up, down the whole way...although we did have a strong tail wind.

With so many riders, we rode in 3 smaller groups.

The route took us through Penzance, passed St Michael's Mount, north of Helston and Falmouth, through places like Come to Good and London Apprentice, and on the King Harry's Ferry just short of our lunch stop.

On the ferry, a complete stranger who had heard Jo's interview on Radio Surrey donated £5 to the cause! Extraodinary!

After a superb lunch stop at the Roseland Inn, and a few bitter shandies, we had a relatively shortish afternoon ride up to the Golant YHA.

The hills were relentless, and continued to hit us thick and fast, but everyone was in high spirits, and all 3 groups managed to arrive shortly before 6pm.

No punctures today, which after our last training ride was a relief!

Tomorrows ride is very likely to be the toughest of the trip, up to Okehampton for lunch, round Dartmoor and on to Exeter.

  1. Thinking of you today - I rode LEJOG 16-30th May and for sure the hills of Devon and Cornwall are the worst. By the time you read this the worst will be over! Well done and enjoy every second of it! :-)
